Yes it is true, many managers only know the basic concepts of social media, but they do not understand the complex backbone and structure  behind it.  In order to gain authority for your website, you must be part of a complete social media content linking wheel structure. This blogging structure is the backbone behind your marketing plan and it is a vital component of social media marketing.

Unfortunately, there are only a few companies who actually combine them. The reason for this is because many social media experts do not know anything about SEO and vice verse.

A top quality company should  have knowledge in both areas because each has a cause and effect on the other.  Understanding how each effects the other is vital for success in your social media marketing strategies.

How can you really tell if your social media manager knows his/her stuff?  Here are a few questions to ask that will help you determine if your social media marketer is qualified or not.

  1. Does he/she know what a blogging linking wheel is and what it does?
  2. Does he/she know what a Google hangout out is?
  3. Do you have a logo design concept, Favicon, and one-line tag line for your business?
  4. Did they explain to you how to build authority by being part of many forums, content sites and social places on the Internet?
  5. Did they offer to help set up and maintain your social media accounts and profiles with all pictures, bios or information attached?
  6. Did they create a SSL Facebook FanPage with an opt in or subscription, contest, contact page with email for you?
  7. Do you have a blog and if not,did they create one for you and explain how widgets work in the blog?
  8. Have they created any promotional videos for you?
  9. Do they understand the concepts behind bookmarks and RSS Feeds?
  10. Do they have your blogs and other related blogs auto feeding into your Facebook and Twitter and other accounts?
  11. Do they understand how important SEO is for social media and vice versa?

And most importantly  do they understand the concept of social responsibility when it comes to social media?  Updating status messages and creating a Facebook page does not constitute being a social media manager any more than being a doctor makes you a surgeon.

They may be a  social media free lance worker but that is not the same as a social media manager.

Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? It is. Social media is the process of creating long term visibility of your brand and it does not happen over night. That is a misconception based on false claims by unqualified social media personnel.

It takes a considerable amount of time and effort and when done properly, it can achieve highly desirable results. Consequently, when done improperly, it can have long lasting devastating results and can cause considerable damage to your brand.

Social media became so popular almost overnight that there was a huge need for social media managers, anyone who even had an inkling to what Facebook could do, started to proclaim themselves self made social media marketers.  With little or no training, they started to flood the market with gimmicks and gadgets that promised quick results.

They achieved these results, but to what avail?  Well, the damage is yet to be seen. Many are not even aware that in a few months from now their Facebook fan pages may disappear overnight. This is the result of many incompetent social media marketers who are unaware that Facebook requires SSL certificates for all Fan Pages.

Facebook has so far been lenient on this because of its newest Iframe implementation, but it is slated to enforce this rule come October 2011.  Any fan page that was created without this SSL certificate may have to be fixed or deleted and re-established on a secure server.

How was your page created? Do you even know? Where is it hosted; on a secure site or a fly by night site that was created just for this purpose?

Companies were so willing to jump on the proverbial social media bandwagon they allowed the market to be flooded with so called social media experts who simply took advantage of making money. The damage is yet to been seen – one thing is for certain, like everything, it will eventually come out in the wash.

Do not let your social media strategy turn into social media hell, get the facts, ask questions and make sure you hire an expert like Think Social to handle your social media.
